WISE stands for Water Insight, Safety & Education and has been developed specially for Transition Year Secondary School students. It builds on the lessons learned in our PAWS (Primary Aquatic Water Safety) programme, to equip students with the knowledge they need to make the right decisions in all sorts of situations to keep themselves, and others, safe on, or near, water.

WISE involves a series of 8 lessons that provide a solid introduction to Water Safety, with a focus on risk assessment and water safety strategies for all aspects of our daily lives, from specific water based activities to hazards and the potential of unforeseen accidents.

All lessons look at different environments and highlight potential dangers so students can better assess the risks, and their ability, to determine the safest course of action in all types of situations for themselves and others.

As every teacher knows, smart thinking can set you up for life. The difference with WISE is that these smarts can save a life.

OVERVIEW OF STRUCTURE & REQUIREMENTS

All lessons are broken into two sections.

Requirements:

  • All lessons are 40mins in length.

  • All presentation materials are available here at teachWISE.ie

  • Compatible computer and projector or smart TV.

  • Students will require pen and paper.

  • Discussions can be in group format or whole class.

1. INSIGHTS

20 mins

Valuable information and advice about the chosen topic presented in the form of a digital lesson book that can either be read individually by students or presented by teachers on a projector or digital screen.

2. APPLICATION

20 mins

Designed to provoke class discussion, we present videos and story-based scenarios that ask students to imagine themselves in potentially dangerous situations and apply the INSIGHTS they have learned. Discussions focus on assessing risk, their ability, and any other factors, to determine the safest course of action for themselves and others.

Project work

Class or group

Time to put what you’ve learned into practice.

Working together as a class or in smaller groups, pick a water safety environment or issue that is relevant to you or your locality. Think about an aquatic amenity, activity or hazard. Your challenge is to create a Water Safety Awareness Campaign that highlights any potential dangers and delivers practical advice on how to mitigate them.
